Common Name: Chamomile Flower Botanical Name: Matricaria chamomilla (German Chamomile) / Chamaemelum nobile (Roman Chamomile) Plant Family: Asteraceae Plant Part Used: Flower Heads Form: Dried Whole Flowers Region & Habitat: Chamomile is native to Europe and Western Asia and has been widely cultivated across temperate regions worldwide. It thrives in open, sunny fields with well-drained soil and is often found growing wild along roadsides and meadows. By the 20th century, chamomile was a common fixture in European herb gardens and listed in numerous apothecary and household botanical guides. Traditional & Cultural Use: Chamomile has been used in European herbal traditions for centuries, commonly associated with calming teas, aromatic baths, and household remedies. The flowers were often steeped as a soothing infusion or used in sachets and pillows. Chamomile’s inclusion in British, German, and French pharmacopeias throughout the 19th and 20th centuries highlights its longstanding domestic and cultural relevance. Preparation & Application: Used whole and dried, chamomile flowers are commonly steeped to create a naturally caffeine-free infusion. Add 1–2 teaspoons per cup of hot water and steep for 5–10 minutes. Also used in potpourri, sachets, and botanical bath blends. Organoleptic Notes: Golden-yellow flower heads with a sweet, apple-like aroma. The infusion is light and floral with a gentle, honeyed flavor and smooth finish.
