Turmeric (Curcuma longa)

We use 700 mg of powdered root of the turmeric plant (Curcuma longa), a member of the ginger family, per capsule. Turmeric, the “Golden Spice,” is native to the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. It is deeply rooted in the history and culture of India with ancient Sanskrit having more than fifty names for its virtues. In the 12th century the Venetian Marco Polo encountered turmeric on his travels, writing: “There is also a vegetable which has all the properties of the true saffron, as well the smell as the colour, and yet is not really saffron. It is held in great estimation, and being an ingredient in all their dishes bears, on that account, a high value.”

Black pepper (Piper nigrum)

Each capsule contains 10 mg of powdered peppercorns, the dried fruit of the black pepper vine (Piper nigrum). Native to South Asia, black pepper was celebrated as the “King of Spices” or “Black Gold” and along with Chinese silk, African ivory, German amber and Arabian incense was one of the five essential luxuries of Roman foreign trade. So precious was pepper that Alaric, king of the Visigoths demanded 3,000 pounds of pepper as part of the ransom paid by Rome for its freedom, and it was even found in the mummy of the Egyptian pharaoh Ramesses the Great (1279–1213 BC).
