Zinc (Zn). Zinc is an essential mineral in the diet found in red meat, seafood, yeast, wholegrains and eggs. The RNI differs for each gender, and over the age groups. The male recommended nutrient is 11-14mg/day and for women around 8mg/day. Males have higher requirement of Zinc, simply because it is one of the main minerals needed to produce testosterone. Zinc is taken to promote synthesis of, and protect the structure of DNA. It does so by acting against oxidation and as an antioxidant. Furthermore, Zinc helps to maintain normal hair, skin and nails. This is partially because it acts as an antioxidant and partially because it promotes growth too. Finally, Zinc is recommended to strengthen the immune system.
Copper (Cu). Copper a trace element found in foods few foods such as oysters, shellfish & Brazil nuts. Copper is a divalent atom (Cu2+) this means it is able to help normal transport of another divalent atoms such as Iron (Fe2+). Copper is frequently take to improve hair and skin pigmentation, it’s even known to reverse grey hair formation. Lastly Copper can improve the work of the immune system. It promotes antioxidising enzymes to scavenge free radicals that could be potentially harmful to our health. Finally, Copper is used for metabolism of Vitamin C.
Vitamin C is a water soluble vitamin also known as Ascorbic acid and Ascorbate. We consume Vitamin C in kale, mango, strawberries, carrots, and raspberries. Vitamin C is used to produce collagen found in connective tissues, gums, teeth, skin, bones and blood vessels, promoting their health. Additionally, Vitamin C aids metabolism and energy yield, reducing feelings of fatigue. Also, it is a potent antioxidant that helps to scavenge free radicals and maintain cellular integrity. Not only is it an antioxidant but it helps to regenerate the potent antioxidant, Vitamin E.
