Organic Raw Spirulina Powder. Spirulina is a natural spiral-shaped blue-green algae, which grows in various warm areas of the world. raw Spirulina is cultivated in ponds in Africa, and is the platensis variety which has a milder, more pleasant flavour and smell than other varieties, and is known to mix more smoothly than other varieties. Sevenhills Wholefoods’ raw Spirulina is produced using an air-drying method allowing them to obtain a ‘raw’ product. First, the Spirulina is harvested from carefully monitored cultivation pools. After harvest, the Spirulina undergoes filtration, producing a paste-like substance called ‘biomass’. The biomass is then washed and shaped into thin layers, allowing for the best drying results. The layers are then air-dried at temperatures below 45°C, retaining the product’s raw status. The dried biomass is then milled into a fine powder, to be packaged in pouches. This method produces a product with low moisture levels and naturally long shelf life, while preserving the raw, nutritional content of the product.
